One of the amazing things about the film footage of Novem from 1973 is the fact that they tell us why they wrote their songs. Knowing the inspiration for the songwriter makes their music that much more powerful.

GTO was inspired by one of Alan’s self-centered girlfriends. The song tells the story of how she finally realized this as Alan was driving her down the road in his GTO.

“This girl just said, just drive me down the road!” -Alan

She said "Drive me down the road
in that little blue GTO.
But roll down the window and let somebody know
that we're never comin' back home."

The road beneath us pledges nothing
But that ain't enough to ease her pain.
She cries "Sweet Jesus, forgive me for the way
I've lived my life for no one but me."

She said "It's bullshit to believe
that I exist to love only me
It's time I start to think of someone else
and forget about my goddamn self."

And now she knows what it means
to give and not expect to receive.
The heart at peace gives life to the soul,
but envy rots the bones.

She said "It's bullshit to believe
that I exist to love only me
It's time I start to think of someone else
and forget about my goddamn self."
