One of the amazing things about the film footage of Novem from 1973 is the fact that they tell us why they wrote their songs. Knowing the inspiration for the songwriter makes their music that much more powerful.

Jaslyn cared deeply for the environment and all of the world’s creatures. She wrote Coyote to draw attention to the fact that urban sprawl (a modern term not used by her) was slowly taking over the wilderness. She uses the coyote in the song to express nature’s sadness and helplessness about man’s encroachment on the environment.

“There’s this continuous conversation going on between animals and creation.” -Jaslyn

With the wilderness before us
We take our refuge from the city
The vengeance and the watching angel, the terror
fade in the horizon, just a memory

We live in the city, the opposite of Eden
And we do the work we don't want to do
To live the lives we don't want to live
With a sting in our hearts that says we have to

Can you feel it taking over
I'd forgotten what I needed
Until the moment it took over
When I heard a coyote howling at the moon

Now this is some real conversation
What is he saying again and again?
It's a truth so old we have all forgotten
All living things on earth are kin

Have you heard city is coming?
To take the power it needs to survive
I'm afraid I might be guilty, guilty
That the awful purposes you were never meant to serve are mine

Can you feel it taking over
I'd forgotten what I needed
Until the moment it took over
When I heard a coyote howling at the moon

Oh, what does it mean?
What are the words he's yodeling?
To the moon
To the moon

Can you feel it taking over
I'd forgotten what I needed
Until the moment it took over
When I heard a coyote howling at the moon
