The inspiration for Bridges to the Sun came from Dennis’ summer vacations in Michigan as a teenager. He became fascinated by a hermit that lived in a small house along the lake. The old man never came out and no one ever saw him. Dennis wondered what the old man was doing locked in his house day after day. His answer, as expressed in the song, is he’s building bridges to the sun. He also seems to be speaking to loneliness and mental illness.
“What is that person doing in there? Are they building bridges to the sun?” -Dennis

Hey, world
Tired Sam still has some things to prove.
Hey, world
That old gray man don't need a thing from you.
Runnin' from the fire
Trying to get higher
And I hope you're having fun
Building bridges to the sun
We'd all like to come along
If you'd make room for everyone
And the work is never done
Building bridges to the sun.
The bearded one
Is locked up in his cell
With a deaf ear to the world
And a bucket in the well.
If we'd only listen
And hear what we've been missing
And I hope you're having fun
Building bridges to the sun
We'd all like to come along
If you'd make room for everyone
And the work is never done
Building bridges to the sun.
